The Closet (Le Placard)

Work:: The Closet (Le Placard) (S1227939717)

A film that only the French could get away with, The Closet, hangs on a smart, if slender, idea. A colourless accountant in a condom factory is disliked by virtually everyone because he's so completely unexceptional. Contemplating suicide, he is persuaded to pretend he's gay to get the corporate, ultra-PC world he inhabits to respect him. It works and overnight the drab accountant is the darling of his Board of Directors. The most homophobic of them (Depardieu) even develops a genuine attraction. Making a comedy about someone coming out of a closet they were never in is a risky business but gay stereotypes are nicely punctured in this satisfying French confection.
