Dedicated to 'all the children of war', this award-winning film is the latest example of Iranian cinema's musing on childhood and violence. In a tiny village on the strategic crossroads linking Iran to Afghanistan, a 14-year old Afghani orphan, Kaim, uses his energy and resourcefulness to make himself useful around the Delbaran border truck stop. The government sees the village as a transit point for illegal immigrants and a local policeman would like to see Kaim deported. Life is hard and acts of kindness rare, Indirect storytelling and stunning images combine to create a world that feels so remote we almost feel transported to another planet.
