Detroit’s own Will Gaines, one of the last surviving bebop tap hoofers, celebrates his 80th birthday at Southbank Centre with saxophonist Andy Hamilton, tap dancer Junior Laniyan, Eddie ‘Tan Tan’ Thornton, jiving Lindy Hoppers and special surprise guests. Resident in the UK since 1963, Gaines has danced in the London Palladium, Royal Opera House, Royal Festival Hall and Durham Cathedral, with an incredible range of artists including Derek Bailey, Stan Tracey, John Stevens and Ronnie Scott. His initial American career featured Cotton Club and Apollo Theatre performances alongside jazz legends Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington and Count Basie.
