Work:: Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (S477852515)
Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is one of Europe's most successful and inventive choreographers. His productions are like voluminous story books, full of quirky, wickedly observed characters, recognisable from real-life scenarios.
Production:: milonga (M!longo) (T461837857)
Deeply rooted in Argentinean culture, tango has fascinated and captivated the world with its sexuality, power and beauty. Cherkaoui's m?longa debuted in 2013, and is the first international large-scale tango production to be directed by a non-Argentine artist. After its highly successful UK premiere at Sadler's Wells, m?longa is now touring across the globe, to great critical acclaim offering audiences the chance to explore the traditional tango dance from another cultural perspective. Internationally renowned for his ground-breaking and critically revered award-winning productions such as Sutra and Babel(words), Cherkaoui takes the idea of a milonga as his starting point - those social dance-evenings held in intimate late night bars in Buenos Aires - and draws on traditional influences, adding a contemporary twist. Having collaborated with an incredibly talented cast of Argentinean dancers and live musicians, Cherkaoui has created "a very beautiful show indeed" (Daily Telegraph), bringing his own unique style to tango. Running time: 1hr 35mins (no interval)
