Configurations was widely celebrated for its bravura use of speed and stunning detail. Revisiting and reimagining it for two men and two women, Jeyasingh gives a glimpse into the beginning of her company's life and the inspirational collaboration between choreographer and composer (captured in an hour-long Channel 4 TV documentary at the time). Nyman's music for Configurations became his acclaimed String Quartet No. 2 and will be played live on stage by the Smith Quartet in London and the Benyounes Quartet in Eastleigh, Birmingham and Taunton (other performances use recordings). New designs by Lucy Carter (lighting) and Ursula Bombshell (costume) complete the picture. In
Dev Kahan Hai?/Where is Dev?, Jeyasingh turns for the first time to the dramatic genre of classical Indian dance, inspired by the intense formal dramas of countless Indian films. Dev Kahan Hai?/Where is Dev? is the first sample in Niraj Chag's Bollywood-tinged score and is Jeyasingh's first title in Hindi, a language she doesn't speak. Niraj Chag is a key modern interpreter of Asian classical and folk styles and his work has been described as ?resembling prayer in its power'. Jeyasingh's music director Glyn Perrin oversees the development of the commission while her frequent collaborator Pete Gomes makes accompanying film.
Classic Cut is the first project in a three-year artistic and education programme of work put together to celebrate Shobana Jeyasingh's creative journey over the last 25 years. The programme also includes an international collaborative work with artists from the UK and India in 2012/2013; a new mid-scale work to celebrate the 25th anniversary itself in 2013; and a series of participation and learning projects throughout the next three years. The company has launched a 25th anniversary fundraising campaign alongside this programme.
