Production:: Masurca Fogo (T0497065917)
Widely known for her epic, bittersweet meditations on the human condition, Bausch presents
Masurca Fogo an upbeat, joyous work of possibility and wonder. Commissioned by the Lisbon Expo in 1997, the piece unfolds on a rocky beach. Couples dance in slow moving lines within film images projected directly onto the stage. A series of Bausch's trademark vignettes unfold, depicting the danger and promise of love in an uncertain world: dancers in bathing suits shoot along a polythene waterslide, crowd into a beach hut as the ocean crashes wildly around them. Accompanied by a soundtrack as diverse as k.d. Lang, the Balenescu Quartet's re-invention of Kraftwerk and traditional African and Portuguese music,
Masurca Fogo maintains Bausch's position as one of the most groundbreaking and innovative choreographers of our time.
