Clara/Howl

Clara/Howl

Work:: Clara/Howl (S1664178086)

Two UK premieres in a single evening: Cathy Marston and Bern:Ballett return to the Linbury studio theatre with dance that contrasts classical and contemporary influences, but shares dramatic power. Enduring love is a theme that runs through Marston's work, and Clara is inspired by the passionate relationship between Clara Wieck and Robert Schumann, and their lifelong friendship with Johannes Brahms. Clara was muse to both these great composers, and the love between Robert and Clara, almost thwarted by her domineering father, was the supreme musical romance of the Romantic period. but did Brahms and Clara go beyond friendship? In this poignant new ballet, Marston's interpretation remains appropriately ambiguous. Howl was created for Bern:Ballett by Andrea Miller, a rising star of the New York dance scene and one of Dance Magazine's '25 to watch'. Her explorations of the body, its anatomy and its power are visceral, virtuosic and highly physical. Her dance language is the ideal choreographic vehicle for Howl's reflection on mob mentality, war and its victims, and on human beings as predators.
