Beethoven's powerful and expressive Overture opens this popular programme, which includes Mendelssohn's superb Violin Concerto, sparkling with freshness and spontaneity. Dvorak’s 'Musical letter from America', written whilst he was working there, is both a hymn to the new world and a nostalgic longing to return home, a feeling expressed most powerfully in the second movement's famous Goin' Home melody.
