Prom 8 - BBC National Orchestra of Wales

Prom 8

Work:: Prom 8 (S370)

Part of the BBC Proms.

Production:: BBC National Orchestra of Wales (T383263412)

Wartime music dominates the season's first visit by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, tonight under its Principal Conductor since 2006, Thierry Fischer. Britten's early orchestral masterpiece, inspired by three sections of the Christian Mass for the dead, was a product of his years in the USA but reflects the mood of Europe in 1941. Shostakovich completed his graphic Seventh Symphony the same year, as Leningrad - the city of his birth - lay under German siege. By contrast, Prokofiev's witty and exuberant student Piano Concerto displays the optimism of a young composer (and a formidable pianist) at the beginning of his career. Finish time: approx. 22:00
