The last of this season's youth orchestras was founded a quarter of a century ago by Claudio Abbado as the first to recruit from both Eastern and Western Europe. It now returns under Herbert Blomstedt, Conductor Laureate of the San Francisco Symphony, to play Bruckner's last, unfinished symphony, Mahler's youthful song-cycle - with star baritone Christian Gerhaher as the lovelorn wayfaring lad - and the vivid symphony that Hindemith shaped from his opera about artistic heroism.
