Prom 42 - BBC Symphony Orchestra

Prom 42

Work:: Prom 42 (S5973)

Part of the BBC Proms.

Production:: BBC Symphony Orchestra (T01025677875)

Having conducted Britten's Peter Grimes last year as Music Director of English National Opera, Edward Gardner joins the BBC Symphony Orchestra for the four evocative Sea Interludes from the opera. The heartrending strings and tolling bell of the Cantus by Arvo Pärt (75 this year) forms a hypnotic tribute to Britten; and the programme ends with the Fifth Symphony by one of Britten's great friends - a work which brought Shostakovich back into favour with Soviet authorities. Former Radio 3 New Generation Artist Alina Ibragimova performs the new concerto by Huw Watkins, who, as a pianist, often appears with her in recital. Finish time: approx. 21:15
