Prom 29 - Chopin, Franck, Saint-Saens & Casella

Prom 29

Work:: Prom 29 (S354)

Part of the BBC Proms.

Production:: Chopin, Franck, Saint-Saens & Casella (T1137216527)

Casella's haunting 'Heroic Elegy', dedicated to the 'unknown soldier', continues our series of works written in the shadow of the First World War. Former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Benjamin Grosvenor, still only 22, returns for his fourth Proms appearance in Chopin's lyrical but virtuosic First Piano Concerto; he is also the soloist in Franck's Symphonic Variations - once a Proms favourite (performed here on 60 occasions), though it has been largely absent since the 1960s. Saint-Saens's 'Organ' Symphony continues the French theme. 'With it I have given all I could give,' the composer observed. 'What I did I could not achieve again.' Finish time approx. 21:10

CORONAVIRUS: All venues in the UK were shut down on March 16, 2020, and the restrictions were finally lifted on July 19, 2021. It is important to mention that the UK Theatre Web archive listings (iUKTDb) from March 2020 to July 2021 might not be accurate due to the lack of information regarding rescheduled and cancelled shows.
