Composer-conductor Oliver Knussen directs the BBC Symphony Orchestra in Tippett's Symphony No. 2, inspired by the rhythmic energy of a Vivaldi bassline and the first in a series of works by Tippett to be featured in parallel with the Britten centenary. The revered American pianist Peter Serkin makes his Proms debut in Stravinsky's neo-Classical Concerto for piano and winds and compact serialist conceit Movements.
