In the first of his three appearances this season, Sir Simon Rattle evokes two pairs of history's most symbolic lovers - contrasting Berlioz's response to Shakespeare, and Wagner's to a medieval Celtic legend (the latter featuring two of today's leading Wagner singers, Ben Heppner and Violeta Urmana). Rattle has a long-standing relationship with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and together they offer a chance to hear two great romantic scores performed on instruments of the period.
