Sir Mark Elder, who returns next week with his Halle orchestra, here introduces the first of the summer's youth orchestras. Australian composer (and former Berlin Philharmonic viola player) Brett Dean based his orchestral fantasy on the description in a German children's book of a ruined Roman amphitheatre.
