A concert from the BBC Proms. Beethoven railed against fate in his Symphony No. 5, capturing ideals of fortitude, defiance and bravery in an instant. In her First Night debut, conductor Elim Chan places Beethoven's compelling score at the heart of a celebration that includes fireworks, jubilation and romance. The last comes with Clara Schumann's tender and virtuosic Piano Concerto – performed by a pianist who has championed it tirelessly: Isata Kanneh-Mason, the eldest of the remarkable musical Kanneh-Mason siblings.
