Philharmonia Orchestra - Haydn/Beethoven/Sibelius
Work:: Philharmonia Orchestra (S77971927)
Production:: Haydn/Beethoven/Sibelius (T2011309801)
The fourth of Haydn's Paris set of symphonies is one of the finest in his whole huge output. Three stately opening movements give way to a dancing, lighthearted finale. The young Beethoven set out to show all he was capable of as both composer and pianist in his Piano Concerto no. 1. The dynamic outer movements, including trumpets and drums for extra grandeur, frame a rich, singing slow movement. The first of Sibelius' great cycle of symphonies is a brooding and powerful piece from the late 1890s. While influenced by Tchaikovsky, it shows many signs of the composer he was to become.
