At times dazzlingly virtuosic, at others eerily pensive, and moving between every mood in between, this piece is one of Rachmaninov's finest. High spirits also abound in Shostakovich's Sixth Symphony - the composer wrote of the work that 'music of a contemplative, lyrical nature predominates; I wished to convey moods of joy, spring and youth'.
