Philharmonia Orchestra

Work:: Philharmonia Orchestra (S77971927)

Production:: (T1686201214)

Traditional in format, Mozart’s Third Violin Concerto follows the convention of the orchestra playing accompanist to the solo violin. Although clearly influenced by his travels through Italy, the finale contains the lively Hungarian folk-tune known as the ‘Strasbourger’, which gave rise to the work’s nickname. Mahler’s later works were often associated with the idea of farewell, an idea that was intensified after the posthumous première of his Ninth Symphony. The chaotic waltzes and dances of the earlier movements die out to make way for a beautiful final adagio, an emotion-ridden solemn hymn.
Conductor Lorin Maazel
Performer Arabella Steinbacher (violin)
