These were the words from Goethe's 'Faust' that inspired the 16 year old Mendelssohn to write his first great masterpiece - the resplendent, enchanting and extraordinary Octet. Before it comes Brett Dean's 'Epitaphs' - a homage to five great figures of our time in string quintet form. The programme begins with Shostakovich's 'Two Pieces for String Octet' and also includes the Strauss 'Capriccio'.
