'The flight of the clouds and the veil of mist are lighted from above. A breeze in the leaves .....a wind in the trees.' These were the words from Goethe's 'Faust' that inspired the 16 year old Mendelssohn to write his first great masterpiece - the resplendent, enchanting and extraordinary Octet. Before it comes Brett Dean's 'Epitaphs' - a homage to five great figures of our time in string quintet form. The programme begins with Shostakovich's 'Two Pieces for String Octet' and also includes the Strauss 'Capriccio'. Northern Sinfonia principals including Kyra Humphreys, Iona Brown, Michael Gerrard, Malcolm Critten and Louisa Tuck perform this programme in the Playhouse.
