Joanna MacGregor - Jack Dowland and Blind Joe Death

Joanna MacGregor

Work:: Joanna MacGregor (S0171284845)

MacGregor is one of the world's most wide ranging and influential musicmakers. As a concert pianist she has worked with such eminent figures as Pierre Boulez, Sir Simon Rattle and Sir Colin Davis, and has premiered landmark works from Django Bates to John Adams. A restless innovator, she has continued to break down musical barriers throughout her career, including cross-genre collaborations with Brian Eno, Nitin Sawhney and, at this year's London Jazz Festival, virtuoso oud player Dhafer Youssef.

Production:: Jack Dowland and Blind Joe Death (T01523658186)

MacGregor explores the idea of John Dowland as an early travelling blues musician, interweaving his beautiful lute songs, pavanes and galliards transcribed for piano with transcriptions of the legendary guitarist John Fahey. Like Dowland's lute, Fahey explored myth, love and death, with the help of his alter-ego, Blind Joe Death.
