T1114033263The centrepiece of this year's Elgar Birthday Concert is the composer's Cello Concerto. This is Elgar's last major work and will be performed by soloist Guy Johnston, a former winner of the BBC's Young Musician of the Year competition. Before the concerto, the orchestra will play Elgar's much loved Serenade for Strings; after it, his Enigma Variations. These paint individual portraits of those closest to the composer and Elgar began the work whilst living in Malvern. The evening opens with music by Elgar's contemporary Gustav Holst. His Somerset Rhapsody was inspired by English folksong and was the piece with which he first made his name.Company Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra. Conductor Ben Palmer.
