Circa - Il Ritorno (The Return)

Circa

Work:: Circa (S0495530314)

One of the world's great contemporary circus companies.

Production:: Il Ritorno (The Return) (T285400190)

Live opera fuses with the thrilling physicality of contemporary circus in a potent production that draws on history and mythology to tell a timeless tale of exile, displacement and longing for home. Out of the darkness, Ulysses returns from twenty years of wandering and war, hoping to be reunited with his wife Penelope. But can he reach her before she succumbs to one of her suitors? Forming the narrative basis of this new work by Circa, Monteverdi's opera The Return of Ulysses (Il ritorno d'Ulisse) is layered over themes from Primo Levi's book The Truce - a testimony of a Second World War refugee. Driven by a score melding Monteverdi, traditional folk songs and original composition, Il Ritorno sees singers and musicians join the company's artists whose expressive, dynamic, integrated acrobatics push their bodies to the extreme. Audaciously blurring the lines between circus, theatre, art and dance, Australian ensemble Circa regularly delights audiences with electrically charged shows. Sung in Italian and Yiddish
