Surrealism: Desire Unbound is the first major exhibition of international surrealism to be held in London for over twenty years. The exhibition will look at one of the defining themes of surrealism: desire. Influenced by the Freudian notion that the sexual instincts were fundamental to the development of the psyche, the surrealists saw desire as a path to self-knowledge. The exhibition will include many of the iconic works associated with surrealism and will present a number of surrealist films, and photographs. This exhibition will travel to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (28 January - 6 May 2002).
