000zerozerozero ignites the Whitechapel Art Gallery with a vibrant programme of contemporary music, art, photography, film, fashion and magic, conceived in collaboration with leading British-Asian cultural provocateurs. The title is tribute to 'Shunya' the concept of zero referred to in 4th century BC Sanskrit texts, without which there would be no binary system and no basis for modern technology. It also evokes the need to approach this exhibition from zero, leaving assumptions and post-colonial baggage at the threshold. From Bangalore magic to Bollywood, sitar-laced breakbeats to alchemy, 000zerozerozero showcases interdisciplinary artists who challenge preconceptions of ethnicity, gender and belonging; redefining what it means to be 'British and Asian' at the turn of the century. 000zerozerozero celebrates the Whitechapel's unique situation within East London's Birmingham or Bangladesh, its contributors source multiple cultural facets without being preoccupied by their ancestral origins.
