This is the latest tour of the 1992 Welsh National Opera production of Puccini's Tosca and is as fresh as ever. On the evening we went, the Autumn colds had hit and so we got Geraint Dodd as Cavaradossi and Laurence Cole as Angelotti. I wondered if Claudio Otelli was also suffering as his nasal breathing was pretty loud and more of a sniff than anything.
One of my favourite operas this did not disappoint the the excellent singing underpinned by the great WNO Orchestra - even if the balance was a bit off sometimes making hearing the singing above the music a bit tricky from the stalls - especially some of Cavaradossi. I would like to see a more evil Scarpia than that portrayed by Claudio Otelli but his work in the second act was marvellous.
In all, a lovely evening as I have come to always expect from the WNO.
