You will rarely hear an audience laugh as much as when you go and see Mischief Theatre's "The Play That Goes Wrong". This long-running example of coarse acting, where everything that can go wrong (and a few things that shouldn't) does, indeed, go wrong.
Part slap-stick, part spoof, this mock AmDram society have little or no idea how to present a play, and therein lies the comedy. The genre has always been popular with shows such as "The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen's Guild Dramatic Society" series and the scripts of Michael Green entertaining festival and local audiences. These shows all look easy but require a very high level of discipline and immaculate timing from cast and crew to come off successfully otherwise they can quickly look naff and people can get badly hurt. No problem with this show, the cast work really hard to keep us engaged with the show - the pace is frenetic, a necessary decision with this show as it doesn't give the audience time to think too deeply!
An excellent evening even though this is not really my cup of tea - brilliantly staged.
