This is a feel good play set in India where a run-down hotel on its last legs tries to re-invent itself as a "retirement hotel" for British pensioners who want a new adventure or who can no longer afford the UK. An eclectic mix of pensioners arrive to find the hotel is not the luxury palace they were promised but as they slowly engage with the people they grow to love, and eventually defend, their new home. All the elements of the 2011 film are there and much of the dialogue rang true for the audience, who were also largely "of an age".
Plenty of laughs along the way, good pace and a well designed set kept the audience interested and amused. There is a lso some pathos in there which hits home as the characters are well written and performed meaning that we properly engage with their lives and care about their outcomes. The result is an enjoyable evening of entertainment.
p.s. For me, any show that ends with a Bollywood dance is worth the ticket!
