What a terrific night out and a great alternative to Panto with plenty of fun, a decent story and great performances - that will be why it is "back by popular demand" and filling the main house!
The production bowls along at a great pace as the rather wet Walker children (Swallows) set off on their adventure only to meet the somewhat rougher-round-the-edges Blacketts (Amazons) - personally, if asked to choose (and we are) I think I'm more of an Amazon but all the children are delightfully rounded and beautifully timed characters, I recognised every one of them from the playgrounds of my youth. This is definitely an ensemble piece and I'm happy to report no weak links in this chain.
Actual set is minimal with pieces brought on as requried by the flat-capped crew/musicians/other parts who become everything from wildlife to waves (and, quite excellently, spume) ... its a real delight to watch and they get most of the good laughs. There's a terrif audience participation bit near the end (I woint spoil it for you) and a surprisingly moving and effective ending as the two little boats sail off.
This is a delightful piece and a very worthy entry into the Christmas Outings pot ... worth chosing if you are panto-ed out or just fancy a change or just fancy an enjoyable night out! You'll probably enjoy it more if you have kids in tow but it works for adults too as its daft enough to just sit back and enjoy. I'm very glad this has had a second outing and hope it might make a few more come-backs in the future
Delightful
