Transfer Productions have produced a cracking production of one of the best musicalsof this century: the Tony Award-winning show Spring Awakening. The actor musicians relish the folk rock score with most music performed live. Samuel Harjanne has directed quick slick scenes brought alive by Jane McMurtrie's vibrant choreography.
Based on Frank Wedekind’s play of the same name this piece explores a group of youngpeople coming to terms with their own voices and sexuality but cutting the tedious scenes of the original to get straight to the key action.
David Perkins makes Melchior lovable yet tortured by the intolerance of his outdatedsociety. Sam McCullum gives us the works with Moritz' journey from discovery to despair. Rhian Lynch allows us to sympathise with Wendla while she discovers the truth of love.
The other performers slip in and out of different characters gracefully and thereis no weak note.
This version of the updated Wedekind play justifies bringing it to the Fringe. It really was a breath of Spring – plus sex!
