Before I say anything else, if you're a Rocky fan (show virgin or fanatic) you will have a great time, the audience lapped it up and this is one occasion where the noisier the cheap seats get the better! Despite the weather there was plenty of dressing up so there must have been some pretty cold people going home and some rather surprising sights passing through Bristol's streets.
This is the 40th Anniversary Tour (checking back, we carried brief news of the 25th anniversary tour too, I remember that, with Jason Donovan) and it is great to see this show still filling theatres. The cast includes Ben Forster as Brad, Roxanne Pallett as Janet, Philp Franks as Narrator, Kristian Lavercombe as Riff-Raff, Abigail Jaye as Magenta, Ceris Hine as Columbia, Oliver Thornton as Frank-N-Furrter, Rhydian as Rocky and Joel Montague as Eddie/Dr Scott. With just the four phantoms there were times when the stage seemd a bit too big to fill and even the set seemed a little overwhelmed at times. For me, Janet was played without much conviction to the part but I greatly enjoyed Brad and Rocky and Mr Franks Narrator was a match for the audience even though he is no longer positioned behind a lecturn being given free reign of the stage instead.
Was it the best Rocky I've seen? Sadly I think I'll have to say no. Did it really matter? Happily, no, it doesn't really matter, Rocky is as much an immersive audience experience as it is a show and this one gave me all that plus the chance to Time Warp with friends. Excellent. Can't say fairer than that ;-)
