I think you know the story, and you are probably familiar with the film so the real question is how does this iconic musical work on stage ... to which the answer would have to be "extremely well thank you"!
Connie Fisher looks really comfortable on stage and manages to make the character her own despite the ghost of Julie Andrews ... indeed, the only time I thought about the film during the show was to think "hmm, this song wasn't on screen" ... yes, a couple of extra songs, rather good ones actually ....
All the eprformances, inclusing the children right down to the wmallest, are strong and I particularly enjoyed Martin Callaghan's slightly Eddie Izzard like Max ... beautifully timed and portrayed.
Scene changes, and there are a lot, are slick and I was particularly struck by the abbey/convent set - simple and effective ... funny, even in a play the sight of huge swastikas really gives me an instant cold sweat
Congratulations to all, you've been having, from what I saw, a deservedly succesful tour ... thank you for giving me the chance to indulge my guilty pleasure of loving this musical!
