Lord of the Dance

1
Seen at the Bristol Hippodrome.
By Robert Iles - 4th Dec 2009

Quite a sizeable part of the audience seemed to really enjoy this show. I was not amongst their number. I am not sure what that says about either me or the demographic of the target audience though I was pleased that for once there was absolutely no queue at the bar!

I saw Riverdance earlier this year on its somewhat extended Farewell Tour and enjoyed it well enough but "Lord of the Dance" seemed to me an entirely different beast. Played entirely to recorded music and a click track that made no pretence at all of representing the feet of the dancers this was a half-hearted and weak show that concentrated on storytelling rather than the expertise of the dance ... something that might have worked well had the story been interesting and the telling less pretentious.

Something of a bad wig and click-track show there were people near me creased up with laughter at the whole sorry affair, frankly I found it less amusing and more annoying that the production really didn't try to cover up its weaknesses - had I paid I would have felt ripped off, as it was I wasted a journey and an evening of my life that could easily have been better spent. The one thing I did enjoy was the excellent choreography of the 50-odd robo-spots ... well done the lighting designer!

Sorry, I really do not think this show is worth the effort of watching when it clearly isn't worth much effort from the company.
