What a delight to see this production performed in the small Village Hall in Boscastle, the intimacy of the venue lending a certain something to this high energy version.
From the opening soundscape that pulls us back through time to Victorian London, to the simple staging, everything is subservient to the story - no flash, no gimmicks, just the highest level of storytelling. There are only 2 props, a few lighting changes, some echo and some supporting sound effects, nothing else is required. Guy takes us on a journey meeting all the characters we expect and passing through Scrooge's transformation in a completely engrossing performance that delighted, entertained and amused in equal portions.
Like many people, I see quite a few Christmas Carols (and derivatives) each year, it is such a compelling story, but this one is truly a stand out version thanks to Guy's energy and versatility which makes each scene and each character, reach out from the stage and grab you. The audience was engrossed and you could hear a pin drop between the bouts of laughter! The fact that Guy can play this one in the Theatre Royal Bath, then in a small village hall and within a week take it off-Broadway is a real tribute to his skill in engaging his audience.
A consummate storyteller telling a timeless tale - what more could you ask for!
