It's New Year's Eve 1999 and the threat of global meltdown from Y2K is ever-present. In a swanky, Manhattan apartment, Jennifer and Christopher West are throwing a suitably lavish dinner party for their nearest and dearest to see in the new millennium.
Excellently staged in the versatile space of the Drayton Arms Theatre, "When Midnight Strikes" is a musical with wit, charm, twists, turns and well-realised characters. All 12 of them! This is truly an ensemble piece which director, Marc Kelly, moves around the space with ease and confidence.
With lyrics by Kevin Hammonds and music by Charles Miller, this cleverly constructed musical is a delight from start to finish. There are great performances from each of the cast members but special mention must be given to Ellie Nunn who is a standout as Josephina, Georgina Nicholas as Twyla and Marcia Sommerford as Rachel. Actor/Director Marc Kelly captures Bradley, the uber-camp gay best friend, to a tee.
This is a rare outing for this musical and proves to be a treat for the eyes and the ears. Highly recommended.
