The Rude Mechanical Theatre Company
The company, who work in a carnivalesque style influenced by the commedia dell'arte, take theatre to mainly small rural communities. Using a showman's living wagon, a pageant wagon and gas lighting, they emulate the portable theatre methods of the early 19th.C. theatre showman Sam Wild. Annual tours take place through Hampshire, Sussex, Surrey and Kent. "Travelling theatre honed to a fine art" (The Stage). The company are touring to village greens, recreations grounds, heritage sites and festivals through South East England from 28th June to 26th August, 2002, with a new play, 'The Comedy of Babi Babbett'. It has been created by the company and developed in Italy using the traditonal techniques of the commedia dell'arte, except using the Pedrolino white-faced mask make-up instead of masks - and brightly coloured cartoon-ised 'wig-hats' and costumes. Hilarious farce and poetic beauty of the commedia dell'arte! Further information & Central Box Office: 01323-501260
