Work:: Phoenix Dance Theatre (S876)
Phoenix Dance Company are one of the leading exponents of contemporary dance.
Production:: See Blue Through/Harmonica Breakdown/New Works (T1055254360)
Phoenix Dance Theatre present a new mixed bill of inspiring and entertaining dance works from international choreographers. Four different dances in one evening by four different choreographers. Brazilian Henrique Rodovalho laces his sinuous movement with humour, emotion and an influence from capoeira martial arts. He creates a shifting world of film projections set to traditional South American beats. Didy Veldman’s See Blue Through transforms seven dancers into undulating creatures inhabiting an underwater world suggested by a fabulous mirrored set. A rare revival of Jane Dudley’s 1938 masterpiece, Harmonica Breakdown, sees a female dancer pit her irrepressible positivity against the Great American Depression in an uplifting solo to Sonny Terry’s Blues. The programme is completed by a new work from Artistic Director, Javier De Frutos, whose sensual and emotionally charged Nopalitos brought Phoenix critical acclaim in 2006. He’s also known for his work with New Zealand Ballet, Rambert Dance Company and most recently, the hit West End musical Cabaret.
