Michael Symmons Roberts is the winner of the prize for Poetry at the 213 Costa Book Awards. Having also won the Forward Prize 2013 in October, it was recently announced in January 2014 that Michael's latest collection of poems, Drysalter, has been awarded the Poetry prize at the 2013 Costa Book Awards. The Costa judges described the collection as "contemporary life filtered through the form of common prayer with a musicality sustained across a memorable body of work." Born in 1963 in Preston, Lancashire, Michael is Professor of Poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University. As well as six collections of poetry, he has published two novels and his continuing collaboration with composer James MacMillan has led to two BBC Proms choral commissions, song cycles, music theatre works and operas for the Royal Opera House, Scottish Opera, Boston Lyric Opera and Welsh National Opera. Karen McCarthy Woolf is a poet, playwright and author, Karen is the editor of three literary anthologies, including Ten: The New Wave which is forthcoming from Bloodaxe Books. Her poetry is published widely, notably with Poems on the Underground, the American journal Prairie Schooner and Poetry Review. Her collection An Aviary of Small Birds will be out this autumn with Carcanet.
