A showcase of some of the most adventurous work by young people from the UK and abroad marks the launch of InterNational Connections. It features innovative productions created by young people in collaboration with the National. The second phase, beginning in the autumn, links the National with ten flagship theatres and a multitude of schools and youth theatres worldwide. Groups will be invited to produce one of 12 specially commissioned plays and musicals in their own venues, at regional festivals and at the National in July 2002. Four nights of the hottest new work for and by young people. The brainchild of the Royal National Theatre, International Connections commissions a dozen new works from highly-respected writers such as Kay Adshead, Andy Hamilton, and Horton Foote. Youth groups from across the country then choose the stage one of these pieces and take part in a regional festival which, for the first time in 2002, comes to Theatre by the Lake. Marking a new stage in the theatre's commitment to young people, this is an opportunity to see groups from across the country, including Cumberland Youth Theatre, performing original new plays.
