You Strike the Woman You Strike the Rock archiveOn August 9th 1956, 20,000 South African women marched to their capital city, Pretoria, to protest about the controversial 'pass' laws. The 'pass', an Africans-only identity document, was identified by the protestors as a' badge of slavery', and was met by significant resistance. You Strike the Woman, You Strike the Rock is one of only a handful of plays written by South African women about the major role they played in the struggle against apartheid, and towards freedom. Focusing on the stories of three women who marched to protect their civil liberties, their stories are a distillation of the story of black women in South Africa.
