Wild Honey archiveIn 1920, sixteen years after Chekhov's death, a new and unknown play by him came to light. The bulky manuscript, in Chekhov's own hand, was found inside a safe deposit in a Moscow bank. The title page of the manuscript was missing, but the play has often been named after its hero, Platonov. Written when Chekhov was twenty-one, Wild Honey stands in contrast to his later plays as it moves between the genres of melodrama, romantic comedy, farce and a darker comedy. Michael Frayn, whose own work shows a similar diversity, has masterfully remodelled (and cut several hours from) Chekhov's original, while remaining true to its spirit.
