Details
The first of Trollope's much-loved Barsetshire chronicles, The Warden tells the story of a decent man, the Reverend Septimus Harding, caught between powerful conflicting forces: conscience versus duty, reform versus entrenched tradition, public disclosure versus individual privacy. The themes still resonate today - the power of an uncontrolled press, nepotism and corruption in high places, abuse of privilege, hypocrisy, resistance to change. Trollope brings to these weighty matters a gentle humour, a sense of fairness and a love story too, with Harding's daughter, Eleanor. Torn between her love for her father, and her love for the man who is the cause of his problems.
