In Ancient Judea, King Herod rules his family and his people with an iron fist. When rumours of his death arrive in the palace, the news brings joy to some and despair to others. As his wife Mariam, sister Salome, and the rest of his court begin to act under their new found freedom, they do not consider the possibility that the rumours are not true. When Herod returns, the consequences are swift and brutal... Staged Reading. First published in 1613, The Tragedy of Mariam is the first play in English known to be written by a woman. Set against a backdrop of dynastic politics, the play explores themes of power, freedom and marriage and is performed as a companion piece to Clwyd Theatr Cymru's current production of The Taming of The Shrew.
