The Snow Queen archiveA fairy-tale treat for families, Hans Christian Andersen's classic children's tale of adventure, friendship and bravery. Once, a wicked goblin made an evil mirror. When you looked into it, everything good and beautiful appeared worthless and bad. Then, the mirror was broken into a million pieces. Some got into people's eyes and, for them, the world became an ugly place. Even worse, some got into people's hearts and turned them into lumps of ice. That's what happens to Kai. Now he isn't happy with his home, his grandmother or his best friend, Gerda. He flies away to live with the Snow Queen in her icy palace far away in Lapland. Heartbroken, Gerda sets off alone across the wide world to find him, helped by the little robber girl, the crow and the reindeer.

LOAD OF RUBBISH NOT WORTH OPENING THE THEATRE FOR!!!!

The Snow Queen By Hans Christian Andersen Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham, 11 January 2006 What better way to start the New Year than to see a skilful production of this classic children’s tale. Shirley Anne Field is both stunning and frightening as The Snow Queen. The stage is open to the audience from the moment you enter the auditorium and all of the action takes place in the round with the musicians just off stage. The simple staging of this production gives it a repertory feel and the entire cast worked very effectively together. The story is told with the addition of tuneful songs and a recurrent theme song “My Best Friend” performed by Lydia Griffiths in the role of Gerda. The Snow Queen captured the feel of winter and the sequences with snowfall were pretty and well received by the audience. The comedy in both acts worked well but I felt Act 2 moved along much more easily possibly because of the inclusion of a little jazz sequence for the robbers and the introduction of Rudi the Dudi a reindeer played by Michael Offei. Sam Bloom was an energetic Kay separated from the love of his life Gerda. They all gelled together and brought to life the fairy tale we all love and know so well. The lighting and set were just right for this production and it was so pleasant to see a real family show and one that deserved a much bigger audience on the night. Produced by Good Company the show lived up to exactly that. Directed and adapted by Sue Pomeroy this charming production runs until Saturday 14 January and I would recommend it to all those with children and those still young at heart themselves.
