Details
The play is set against the background of a seaside cafe owned by Baptista Minola, a wealthy man from Cremona with daughters, Dianca and Katherina. Although there are plenty of suitors for Bianca, Baptista will not allow her to be married until someone is found for the shrewish Katerina. This is what Petruchio says he will take on and armed with a brilliant improvised plan of campaign, the couple meet. He presents Katherina with an absurd image of her own aggressiveness and perversity. Beyond this he treats her to a fascinating display of his own whimsical humour and suggests by implication the rich pleasure that might lie for her in sharing the comic world of his imagination.
