Details

In this gripping and thought-provoking piece set in 19th century France, questions about the notion of identity are raised when Dr Gilbert Chesnet "diagnoses" 18-year old Alice Barbin as a biological male. As the boundaries between the sexes blur, conventional ideas of medicine, religion and the very fabric of society are put under the microscope as the age-old question of how we define ourselves is challenged.
