The Robe archiveRemembered for the 1950 s epic film starring Richard Burton, Jean Simmons and Victor Mature, The Robe is a powerful and moving story showing the conflict between Roman imperialism and cruelty and the emerging force of Christianity. Marcellus Gallio, a Roman Soldier of authority, comes into conflict with a runaway Greek slave Demetrius and accidentally encounters his childhood sweetheart Diana. Marcellus is sent to Jerusalem to oversee the crucifixion of Christ. When Demetrius becomes inextricably drawn to Jesus presence and Marcellus wins Christ s robe at the foot of the cross at a gambling game of dice, the lives of the two men would never be the same again. The stage is set for a spectacular story of love, cruelty, freedom and faith.
