The Reader archiveThe Reader tells the story of the passionate and almost silent love affair between Michael, a 15-year-old boy and Hanna, a mysterious older woman, in post-war Germany. When Hanna disappears one day, out of the blue, Michael is left bewildered betrayed, angry. A few years later, now a law student, Michael observes the trial of five former concentration camp guards charged with sending hundreds of women to their deaths at Auschwitz. Hanna is one of the guards on trial and is sentenced to life imprisonment, possibly for crimes she did not commit. Having come to terms with Hanna's brutal and secret past, though still haunted by her, Michael sends her tapes of himself reading books until they eventually meet again... World Premiere.
