In Anton Chekov's short play
The Proposal, a country gentleman finally decides to ask his neighbour's daughter for her hand in marriage but cannot hold a discussion with her without engaging in furious argument. The play borders on tragedy as it often seems that the pair, in love despite themselves, will prove too frustrated to express any intentions at all.
